Abstract
NBS has recently submitted a draft of a general apparel flammability standard to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. If accepted by the Commission, proposed in the Federal Register, and issued in final form, this standard would replace CS 191-53, the present general wearing apparel standard. It is based on the Mushroom Apparel Flammability Tester (MAFT) concept. The paper describes in some detail the work on which this apparatus and the standard are based: analysis of burn accidents collected in FFACTS, work under grant at the University of Maryland and MIT, and experimental work at NBS and in other laboratories.
