- Abstract
- This report gives the temperature characteristics of fires that have occurred or that are likely to occur on the flight deck of aircraft carriers. The conditions affecting the engulfing fire (e.g., wind speeds) and the temperature that ordnance would be directly exposed to are given. Several unique technical developments were required to achieve the project goals of fire characterization and ordnance exposure evaluation. The development of a fire test facility to technically simulate the carrier deck and the development of various temperature data processing and analysis techniques were required. The facility, instrumentation, data processing techniques, and models are described in detail. Comparison of analytical predictions and experimental results is provided.
