- Abstract
- Losses from fires in the United States are a serious national problem, both socially and economically. Direct property damage exceeds two billion dollars, and more than 12,000 people die each year in fires. Even more numerous are the thousands of fire victims who survive but endure long, expensive hospital confinements under intensive care and suffer permanent disability or disfigurement. Indirect losses to business and productivity are difficult to measure, but are probably at least as large as direct losses. Rising insurance rates also point to fire as a serious national problem.
