Abstract
Studies following the Northridge, California earthquake examined the earthquake related fire events and also the performance of fire protection systems for buildings. New work looked at the protection of the building envelope from external fire sources. This problem is also related to more frequent urban fire events where structures are threatened by fire starting in wildland vegetation. New software, HAZUS, is been developed to perform standardized earthquake loss estimations that included the losses produced by fires following earthquakes.
