Abstract
[ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH] Atria, malls, and other large size glass buildings have recently become very popular in public building in Finland. Atria are large roms, and constructed from new type of building parts which present big demands on their fire protection. This publication consists of three parts. The first part deals with design of atria according to Finnish and foreign building codes. Especially safety of egress, active fire protection, smoke venting as well as materials and structures are dealt with. The second part deals detailed with smoke venting applying a recent NFPA Guide on an atrium inside an office building. Additionally, the same object is simulated numerically using a zone model code BR12. The third part deals with thermal load of structural members of an atirum inside a big office building applying numerical fire simulation using a zone model code BR12. The simulation yields hot layer temperature, and smoke layer height inside the building. The whole report is a review on the fire protection design principles starting from the simple traditional presciptive calculation rules, and ending to examples to utilize numerical fire simulation to solve special problems in fire safety design.
