- Abstract
- In the 90's we have recognized the need for a modular urban conflagration fire growth model, just as in the 70's the need for modular compartment fire models was recognized. This model will apply to both post - earthquake fires and urban/wildland intermix fires. Indeed, it has been suggested that intermix fires be utilized as opportunities to practice for even larger post-earthquake conflagrations. Twelve sequential components of a conflagration growth model are outlined. Propagation by burning brands is discussed indetail, since recent experiences in Kobe, Northridge and Oakland suggest that high wind velocities are essential precursors for disastrous conflagrations. Since windows are a structural weak point, single and double pane window breakage is also describes. Significant advantages accure to double pane windows. Mitigation measures and planned development of modular elements are included.
