Abstract
A fire in a ship's accommodation may have serious results for passengers and crew. Even a limited fire often leads to severe material damage. It is therefore important to investigate the origins of fire and how materials used affect the fire process. The aim of the project presented in this report has been to take an inventory of materials used today in passenger vessels' accommodations in order to provide a basis for continued work on fire safety onboard. The report describes different causes of fire, compares fire properties of different materials, presents principles of internal fire protection and discusses factors affecting the choice of materials. It concludes with an assessment of the materials properties needed to be known in order to provide a better analysis of fire risks and processes.
