Abstract
The risk of damage and casualty due to fire exists on rail rapid transit systems. Decisions concerning the reduction of fire risk should be based on logical analytical criteria. The Engineering Method is an analytical tool which can be employed to assist in making such decisions. The Urban Mass Transit Authority (UMTA) has sought to develop analytical techniques for risk assessment. This paper describes in detail the use and application of the Engineering Method for use as a tool in the firesafety risk analysis of rail rapid transit systems. Sample analyses have been included in this work to not only reinforce the analysis procedure, but also to reveal the rationale appropriate to an analysis using the Engineering Method.
