Abstract
Emergency medical services (EMS), by their nature, are constantly in the public eye. This visibility brings with it certain responsibilities to the public: to explain what is happening at an emergency scene as accurately as possible, to respond to public inquiries regarding an emergency response procedure, to help citizens understand how and why their EMS providers respond the way they do, and to help educate the public regarding injury and illness prevention. Above all, this manual stresses the importance of building a team to conduct EMS PIER activities. In addition to local businesses and community supporters, your state EMS office may be able to support your efforts. PIER can be a win-win program for local, regional and state EMS operations, but achieving this generally requires the broader support that only a team can offer you.
