Abstract
Advanced research activities related to Architectural Science, Building Services Engineering and Fire Engineering are carried out under the supervision of Professor W.K. Chow, Department of Building Services Engineering (BSE), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The objectives of carrying out those research projects are not for personal satisfaction but to solve practical engineering problems, to search for advanced knowledge in building services engineering and to maintain the quality of teaching. These are essential in achieving excellence in teaching at the PolyU where advanced and practical degree courses up to MSc level are offered; and the mission is to conduct Applied Research. The research findings are useful to the industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR, formerly Hong Kong) and the Mainland as well. Research in Fire Engineering aims at exploring the scientific understanding of building fire problems and establishing an adequate theoretical basis for fire protection engineering. Given the basic scientific principle, the appropriate design of active fire control systems can then be developed. This is very critical in implementing Engineering Performance-Based Fire Codes (EPBFC) for providing better safety to people. As written down by Chairman of the National People's Congress, Li Peng, in the opening ceremony of the "Fire Safety and Technology Research Centre for Large Space" jointly established by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University (Polyu) of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in June 1997.
