- Abstract
- The study of combustion includes such discipliners as fluid mechanics, heat and mass transport, and chemical kinetics. In the past decade, a great deal of progress has been made in understanding the basic phenomena involved in combustion and in applying that knowledge in innovative ways. The subject is usually diveded into the separate topics of controlled and uncontrolled combustion. Controlled combustion is the consumption of a fuel to liberate heat, which is then put to some use. Uncontrolled combustion, or fire, involves the unintended destruction of a fuel source.
