Abstract
Two important factors would determine whether smoke control system has to be installed in an atrium. They are the space volume of the compartment and the fire load density. The geometrical shape of the atrium is not considered. Recent fire modelling studies indicated that the smoke filling process in atria of different shapes but same volume would be very different. A time constant is proposed as a substitute to the space volume. This parameter included the geometry of the compartment and the probable fire size. Several expressions derived from different plume equations and transient variation of smoke layer interface height are reviewed and compared. Zone modelling simulations are performed to derive correlation equations between the smoke filling time and the time constant.
