Abstract
Two test series simulating the hazards with an accidental release of hydraulic fluid near to a source of ignition have been performed with four hydraulic fluids; mineral oil, organic ester, water in oil emulsion and poly-glycols in water solution. As a result a test method is proposed as a basis for estimating the fire hazards of the fluid. In this test method the combustion efficiency, the net calorific value, the water content, the spontaneous ignition temperature and the rate of production of smoke and toxic gases are determined.
