Abstract
The primary objective of this report is to examine the modern technology which is available to the fire service to improve its efficiency and effectiveness. We determine that the fire service has not devloped technologically to its full potential - indeed it has fallen far short. The introduction explores some of the reasons for this retarded growth. The report then addresses eleven major areas where it is believed that technology can be applied productively to the fire service. Where possible, we evaluate existing products and equipment which are available, and identify areas where further research and development is necessary. It is intended that this report is the first installment of a two part study. The second part will analyze the problems and recommend the application of technology and modern management principles to a specific case - the Oakland Fire Department. Much of the preliminary research has already been accomplished, but much remains.
