- Abstract
- The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), in southeastern New Mexico, is an underground repository, designed for the safe geologic disposal of transuranic (TRU) wastes generated from defense-related activities of the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE). The WIPP storage rooms are mined in a bedded salt (halite) formation, and are located 2,150 feet below the surface. After the disposal of waste in the storage rooms, closure of the repository is expected to occur by creep (plastic flow) of the salt formation, with the waste being permanently isolated from the surrounding environment.
