Abstract
At approximately 1:00 am on Saturday, September 8, 1990, a fire occurred at the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity house at the University of California Berkeley. The fire killed three students and resulted in the injury of two others. In addition, the building was heavily damaged by the fire. As part of its ongoing program to investigate technically significant fires, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) documented the Berkeley incident in order to establish facts, to analyze factors contributing to the loss of life and property, and to report lessons learned. The International Conference of Building Officials assisted during the investigation and during the preparation of this report. The NFPA/ICBO investigation of this incident was possible through the cooperation of the City of Berkeley Fire Department and the State of California Office of the State Fire Marshal.
