Abstract
This report covers the final 1-1/2 years (inclusive of an extension granted) of contractural research and exploratory development efforts on fluids, lubricants, coatings, and elastomer materials. Synthesis efforts are reported on model compounds of perfluoropolyalkylethers (PFPAE), other base fluids and additive materials. Experimentation was conducted on several synthetic fluids to determine their traction behavior. Nonflammable hydraulic fluids based on CTFE were extensively investigated, characterized and mechanically evaluated in hydraulic pumps. High-temperature hydraulic fluids were similarly studied. Various PFPAE fluid candidates were subjected to thorough investigations to determine their suitability as gas turbine oils. Surface studies of tribological systems were carried out utilizing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Elastomeric materials were compounded and evaluated for aerospace applications. Dynamic tests were conducted on the most promising seal materials. The space combined effects primary test research equipment (SCEPTRE) was relocated to a new laboratory and made operational for coating materials research.
