- Abstract
- Cigarette ignition of furniture is by far the leading cause of fire deaths and injuries in the United States. While more ignition-resistant furnishings are being manufactured, fire casualties could be more rapidly reduced if cigarettes were manufactured to cause fewer ignitions. To provide both the fundamental understanding of the cigarette/furniture ignition process and practical application of that knowledge, the Center for Fire Research of the National Bureau of Standards pursued the following fundamental and applied research tasks under the Cigarette Safety Act of 1984. This research project comprised several concurrent, interactive studies. These ranged from computational to experimental, fundamental to empirical.
