- Abstract
- Advanced aircraft operating in supersonic and hypersonic flight regimes impose many environmental problems on aircraft subsystems. Fire extinguishing equipment will be requred to operate efficiently over a -65 deg F to 500 deg F temperature range. To meet this requirement, a full scale Pyrotechnic Fire Extinguishing System was designed, developed and fire tested under simulated flight conditions. This Pyrotechnic Extinguishing System (wherein pyrotechnic pressurization replaces nitrogen as an energy source) will function effectively under extreme environmental conditions and its performance on a weight effectiveness basis is superior to that of the standard nitrogen pressurized units.
