- Abstract
- This report examines a fire that erupted at a fuel storage and dispensing facility at the Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, on November 25, 1990. The flight operations of one airline were disrupted because of the lack of fuel to prepare aircraft for flight. Airport facilities, other than the fuel farm, were not affected by the fire. The safety issues discussed in the report are the maintenance and inspection of fuel storage facilities on airport property; the training of personnel charged with maintaining and inspecting fuel storage pumping equipment; the safety features for fuel pumping equipment; Federal Aviation Administration inspections of fuel storage facilities on FAA-certificated airport property; and industry contingency plans for responding to large fires on airport property. Safety recommendations concerning these issues were made to the FAA, the operator of the fuel farm, the National Fire Protection Association, the Airport Operators Council International, and the American Association of Airport Executives.
