Abstract
A market survey on fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) was completed by RAPRA for the Engineering Materials Requirements Board in 1977 and was subsequently published. The survey included an assessment of the market for FRP in anti-corrorion uses - tanks, pipes and other vessels - and this was identified as the fast growing area of FRP usage in the UK. It was forecast that consumption of glass reinforced thermosets in this field would grow by an average 12% p.a. from 1976 to 1980 and 10% p.a. from 1980 to 1985 from 8,000 tonnes (1976) to 12,500 tonnes (1980) and 20,000 tonnes (1985). It was also clear that in Western Europe as a whole and in the USA consumption of FRP in this area has been growning much faster than total FRP. The purpose of the present survey is to review developments in the FRP anti-corrosior area since the original survey was published. Although it is intended to be self-contained it does not purport to describe the basics of FRP usage in anti-corrosion outels - this is available in the literature review published as part of the original survey.
