- Abstract
- A test of the Automatic Fire Extinguisher Systems 9AFES) proposed for use in the Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle (FAASV) was conducted by the U.S. Army Combat Systems Test Activity, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD from July 1984 through February 1985, to determine if these systems (crew area and engine compartment) provide adequate protection from the FAASV. The object of the test was to provide the data necessary to evaluate both the crew compartment and the engine compartment AFES. The results indicated that the engine compartment AFES met all necessary requirements and subject to considerations suggested to improve performance, should be considered adequate. The results of the crew compartment testing indicate that although the system was relatively successful at discrimination, it could not consistently suppress explosive initiated full fire. It is recommended that a statement of adequacy for the crew compartment AFES not be issued at this time and that further testing be conducted.
