Abstract
The selection of safe materials for use in the Apollo spacecraft required a thorough nonmetallic-materials test program that was conducted in three phases. After the preliminary screen tests and before any full-scale mockup testing began, a series of tests classified as component flammability tests were performed. The purpose of the component flammability testing was to determine the flammability characteristics of a variety of different sizes, shapes, and configurations of nonmetallic materials of similiar or different types that make up a functional assembly, subsystem, or system in the spacecraft.
