- Abstract
- Two basic safeguards against fire that have been adopted for spacecraft design are 1) minimization of possible ignition sources and 2) minimization of the amount of flammable materials. Because the Apollo spacecraft cabin is filled with pure oxygen, the second goal is particularly difficult to achieve. NASA and industry efforts and accomplishments toward meeting this goal, in the areas of elastomers and plastic composites, are discussed.
