Abstract
ONLY ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH The flame extinguishing concentrations of three halon replacements, HFC-23, HFC-227ea, and FC-3-1-10, for five kinds of flammable liquids were measured by the FRI cup burner apparatus. The liquid fuels are n-heptane, ethanol, toluene, methanol, and benzene. The flame extinguishing concentrations of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and halon 1301 were also measured and compared with those of the halon replacements. The order of flame extinguishing efficiency of the halon replacements is FC-3-1-10>HFC-227ea>HFC-23 for all the fuels ued in the study. FC-3-1-10, HFC-227ea, and HFC-23 require about 1.5, 2, and 4 times as large flame extinguishing concentrations as halon 1301, respectively, except for methanol. The adiabatic flame temperatures of the cup burner flames at extinction were calculated. In the calculation, it is assumed that the diffusion flame is formed at the position where the mixture becomes stoichiometric. The adiabatic flame temperatures at the extinction by the halon replacements are nearly equal to the temperature at the extinction by the inert gases, and 200 K to 400 K lower than the flame temperature for halon 1301. These facts mean that the halon replacements suppressed the cup burner flames mainly by thermal way like the inert gases.
