- Abstract
- Two separate crews are required for hazardous and emergency-type duties in support of Apollo operations on the launch complex at the John F. Kennedy Space Center. The "spacecraft closeout crew" deals with fuel spillage, accidental fire, and astrounaut rescue if the need arises during the prelaunch and cabin-closeout operations. The "astronaut rescue team" becomes responsible for emergency rescue of the astronauts (including fire suppression). The need to find improved and more flame-resistant clothing for emergency crews, and for other personnel engaged in dangerous occupations, led to an extensive investigation of new suit materials.
