Abstract
The U.S. Department of Energy is in the process of developing minimum standards for residential clothes washers. These standards will employ a new test procedure contained in Appendix J1 to Subpart B of 10 CFR Part 430, which was published in August 27,1997. This new test procedure will replace the test procedure that is currently in effect, which is contained in Appendix J of the same document. In order to evaluate the new test procedure, NIST had seven clothes washers tested according to both the Appendix J and the Appendix J1 procedures. These tests were performed under contract to NIST by Intertek Testing Services (ITS). This letter report describes the tests that were conducted, and presents and discusses the test results.
