- Abstract
- At approximately 10:21 p.m. on March 5, 1992, the Whitchurch-Stouffville Fire Department received a call reporting a fire at a home located at 34 Hill County Drive, Stouffville. The occupants of the home were able to evacuate the home without injury. The home, which was of combustible construction, was destroyed by the fire. The total damage was estimated at one million dollars. The fire originated in the area of the factory-built fireplace/chimney installation. The likely cause of the fire was the result of improper chimney clearances to combustibles. Specifically, the lack of proper clearance between the chimney and a wooden cross-support resulted in ignition of the cross-support. This particular fire occurrence reinforces the importance of adhering to codes and standards dealing with installation of solid fuel burning appliances and equipment.
