- Abstract
- The primary objective of the Directorate for Engineering Sciences in this project was to determine the need for revisions and/or additions to the voluntary standards for portable electric air heaters. A critical review of those standards was considered necessary since national fire data suggest that such heaters are major contributors to residential fire deaths and injuries. Accordingly, our efforts were focused on determining how portable electric air heaters can become sources of ignition in the home and, using that information, how the standards could be revised in order to reduce the risk of ignition. ES purchesed a total of three samples of each of thirty-six unique cataglog number portable electric air heaters for analysis and test purposes.
