Abstract
An expert system (Durcon) with a knowledge base consisting of the Freeze-thaw, Sulfate, Alkali-aggregate, and Corrosion aspects of concrete durability has been developed. The knowledge base was formed using the American Concrete Institute's Committee 201, Guide to Concrete Durability. The system has been developed using an expert system shell facility on a microcomputer. This paper discusses knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, issues relating to the maintenance of expert systems, and recommendations for field implementation of Durcon.
