Abstract
Equipment for measuring the rate of infiltration of air thorugh the clearance openings of windows and doors due to wind pressure has been developed at the National Bureau of Standards as part of thed program of research on building materials and structures. By means of the equipment, tests were conducted on double-hung wood windows and light steel casements, types frequently specified for low-cost housing construction. Infiltration measurements were made for systematic sets of clearance conditions, and correlations between amount of clearance and infiltration are given. The results are summarized using a concise method for representing the relationship between air infiltration and test pressure. Relationships between average sash clearance and infiltration at the reference pressure of 0.2 in. of water are given, and a general type of relation between infiltration and pressure is suggested on the basis of the test results.
