Abstract
In the proposal for a program for the maritime fire research need published by the Maritime Fire protection Committee in April 1985, a project regarding development of dimensioning criteria for local application extinguishing system for machinery rooms is described. The proposal for project aims at the development of reliable methods and outlines for dimensioning of effective point protections for those areas in machinery rooms, where the risk of fire and explosion is considerable. This report is a part of the project and it describes the problems and gives proposals for the continued research and development work. The principal direction of the work is aiming at safety promoting effects for the machinery room personnel, which could be achieved by means of more effective local application systems. The purpose of the continued research work is to receive the knowledge for choosing risk objects in a confident way and dimensioning fixed local application system for fire extinguishment in machinery rooms on ships. This report gives proposals for three various research projects, which should be performed. These projects aim at risk analysis, detector surroundings, system dimensioning and quality requirements of the extinguishing systems. In the first project it is proposed that a risk valuaiton system is developed based on a method, which is used for industrial risk valuation. Qualitative methods combined with a measure schedule adjusted to machinery rooms on ships should be drawn up. The second project deals with the environmental aspects controlling the effect of the local application system and which are important when choosing detection principle. In the third proposal for project the requirements for the quality and capacity of the installation is dealt with.
