- Abstract
- Firefighting is known to be one of the most physically and mentally demanding occupations today. Each year, over 50% of the firefighters who die in the line of duty succumb to heart failure and other stress-related problems. Studies have shown that in increased level of fitness for firefighters can reduce the risk of these deaths; thus, physical fitness is a critical aspect of firefighter health and safety. All fire departments can and should have a physical fitness program. This "Physical Fitness coordinator's Manual for Fire Departments" is designed as a resource tool for any Fire Department PhysicalFitness Coordinator to refer to when developing, implementing, and managing such a program. Some of the information may not apply to all departments, but the vast majority of information contained in this manual should be extremely useful and beneficial to Fire Department Physical Fitness Coordinators across the country.
