- Abstract
- On February 5-7, 1992, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sponsored a three-day meeting of the newly formed Operation Urban Wildfire Task Force at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) and the State and Local Programs and Support (SLPS) Directorate hosted the event and coordinated planning. The purpose of the Task Force is to identify strategies to address the new challenges to public safety arising from urbanization of many wildland areas. Cooperation among many agencies is essential to successfully address the fire problems arising from this trend - both through proactive steps to reduce or prevent fire hazards, and through increased preparedness to deal with the unique challenges of wildland fires. FEMA is appreciative of the efforts of Task Force members, who represent a wide range of expertise. The Agency will use the Task Force's recommendations as an important source of guidance in developing the Agency's role in urban wildfire emergency management, and in identifying specific actions to reduce this threat. It is our hope that the recommendations contained in this first report will benefit all who are seeking to address the unique fire challenge of the urban/wildland interface.
