- Abstract
- This report examines the explosive decompression resulting from the loss of a cargo door in flight on United Airlines flight 811, a Boeing 747-122, near Honolulu, Hawaii, on February 24, 1989. The safety issues discussed in the report are the design and certification of the B-747 cargo doors, the operation and maintenance to assure the continuing airworthiness of the doors, and emergency response. Recommendations concerning these issues were made to the Federal Aviation Administration, the State of Hawaii, and the U. S. Department of Defense.
